Tallit Square Patches for Do-It-Yourself Tallit Makers

Mothers and aunts and grandmothers making a tallit often come to our website to get outfitted with needed supplies. We have sold ataras and tzitzit strings for years, but recently it occurred to us that making tallit corner patches available might be a big help.

We now have four or five different designs, and plans to offer additional designs and colors.

It’s very important to position the tzitzit holes 5 cm (2 inches) from each edge, therefore most tallit corner patches are about 10 cm along each edge, with the hole right in the middle.

When sewing, note that the atara (neckband) goes on the upper side of the tallit (i.e. opposite where the tallit rests on the shoulders) while the corner patches should be sewn on the under side. For most people this is counter-intuitive. Why shouldn’t the atara and tallit corner squares go on the same side of the tallit?

Apparently the reason is because a tallit is typically worn with the sides folded up onto the shoulders, therefore to make the decorative corner squares visible, they go on the underside.
